It's the Congress, Stupid!

While we the people are all up in arms about whether Obama or McCain win the presidency, it is easy to forget that it is just as important (more important Constitutionally speaking) which party controls Congress, and by what margin.

While it is tempting to lodge a protest vote by voting for Dean Barclay and throwing Coleman out of office for voting for the bailout package, a vote for Barclay in this election is a vote for Franken. I hate saying that as I love third party candidates and voted for two in the 2006 election. But I don't want Franken in office. Conversely, it is tempting to vote for Tim Walz for voting against the bailout - twice! - but that only adds to the potential for a Democratic Supermajority in Congress. And the one thing the Republican monopoly on power from 2002-2006 taught us is a Supermajority and same party White House can really mess things up (e.g. largest increase in government spending and programs in history under a Republican monopolized government).

The presidency may already be locked up for Obama and the Democrats. When casting your votes for Congress, consider following my high school buddy Peder's advice: When in doubt, vote for a logjam.
